Breed Education
Meet the French Bulldog
History, temperament, and honest expectations before you bring one home.
A short history
Descended from English Bulldogs brought to France by lace workers in the 1800s, French Bulldogs became beloved city companions across Europe and North America — perfectly suited to small apartments and human company.
Temperament
Affectionate, stubborn, playful, and deeply people-oriented. Frenchies bond hard, snore louder than expected, and rarely tire of being on the couch with you.
Exercise needs
Modest — two short walks and some indoor play. Avoid heat and intense running; their airways can't cool down like other breeds.
Grooming
A weekly brush, monthly nails, and daily face-fold cleaning is usually enough. Baths every 4–6 weeks with a gentle shampoo.
Is a Frenchie right for you?
A quick honesty checklist before you commit.
- I can commit 10–12 years of daily companionship
- I have air conditioning and cool spaces available
- I don't need a running or hiking buddy
- I'm okay with snoring, snorting, and gas
- I can budget for vet care (Frenchies need it more)
- I can be home most days — they hate being alone
